ABOUT US
My wife and I were absolutely devastated when our daughter, Natasha, developed leukemia. Over the next few years, we learned a lot about the strengths and weaknesses of her treatment. We now know that your chance for a cure is often directly related to your ability to quickly find a perfectly matched donor in the National Marrow Donor Program registry.
Since Natasha was of mixed heritage - the daughter of an African American father and an Irish American mother - it was impossible to find a perfectly matched donor in the NMDP registry. A high percentage of minorities and a lower, but still troublesome, percentage of whites also face this harsh reality. We are now a leading advocate for finding effective solutions to this solvable problem.
Before our daughter went into the hospital the final time, she told us that "she understood that she may never benefit from the things we were trying to do for her, but that others hopefully would.”
The National Mixed Heritage Stem Cell Foundation, a 501c3 organization, has since been formed to nurture Natasha's mission to help others (click here to see a leadership summary). |
